MISSION STATEMENT

MILLINGTON ALTERNATIVE LEARNING CENTER

The Millington Alternative Learning Center is an alternative program for 9th through 12th grade students that will provide all students with multiple opportunities for success in a supportive and appropriate environment.

OUTCOMES

Students will complete requirements for a High School Diploma.

Students will be prepared to succeed in the work world and/or continue education or training.

Students will possess the skills necessary to be valued members of their families and community.

Program Overview

Much of the course work for M.A.L.C. is independent study.  Learning will be supervised and facilitated by a certified teacher/mentor.  Besides the core academic requirements, students are expected to complete off-campus workplace and service learning credits that are monitored by school staff.

Students who have certain special needs may find those services are not available at M.A.L.C.  To receive such services, a student may need to attend the regular school program.

This is a program of choice with limited enrollment.  Preference is given to Millington students who have been identified by the high school as having the potential to succeed in this setting.  All other students will be enrolled based on available openings.  Some enrollments/returns may be based on a signed behavior contract.  Open enrollment is available through the second week of classes unless otherwise notified.

All new students will be on probation.  Violations of rules, hours, grades, or behavior will result in suspension from M.A.L.C.

Graduation Requirements and Curriculum

All students must complete a graduation plan. This plan can be modified as needed. Its purpose should be to select classes that will prepare the student to become successful after graduation. All students who intend to graduate in June must have their graduation plan reviewed with staff in January and March. Deviations from this plan will not be made after the start of the second semester of senior year, unless there are unusual circumstances. All graduation plans, and changes, must be signed by the Principal. A diploma issued by the MILLINGTON COMMUNITY SCHOOLS will be awarded to those who complete the requirement for graduation.

Computer literacy is an expected outcome through the integration of technology throughout related coursework. Successful completion of a computer class can replace test requirements. A score of 70 percent computer assessment is required for graduation.

Students may take a Voc class at any time. Students attending TTC courses will follow the TTC handbook.

Course Completion Tests will be offered. A student may request the option to test out of a class for credit. Students must make this request at the start of a semester. The passing grade must be 70%. Alternative assessments may be used by the content area teachers and approved by the Principal. Long Distance (Internet) classes may also be available by arrangement.

Students must enroll, and continue 4 classes per semester, and may enroll for 6 classes. Each student must pass 4 of 6 classes or be placed on probation. A student may earn up to 3 credits per semester. More than 3 credits require the approval of the Principal. Students must make progress toward graduation by earning an average of 5 credits a year to continue in the school.

Student Rights and Responsibilities

The rules and regulations in this Handbook are designed to allow each student to obtain a safe, orderly and appropriate education. Students can expect their rights to be respected and receive fair treatment as long as they respect those rights for others. Students are expected to follow teacher directions and to obey all school rules. We expect students to arrive at school prepared to learn.

Parent Rights and Responsibilities

Parents and guardians have the right to know how their student is progressing in school. We will provide that information on a regular basis and as needed. We ask all parents and guardians to call for an appointment if they wish to talk with a member of the staff. Parents and guardians are encouraged to build a partnership with their student's teachers by informing the staff of suggestions or concerns that may help their student accomplish their learning goals.

We expect parents and/or guardians to attend our parent conferences and read this handbook. They should also encourage their students to work hard, attend school on a regular basis and treat all with respect.

Student Safety and Well Being

We expect all students to follow the directions of our staff in case of an emergency such as fires, tornados and drills conducted for student safety. All students must take part in these drills and will be disciplined if they do not. If students or their parents or guardians are aware of any dangerous situation they should tell a staff member or Administrator immediately.

State law requires that all students must have an emergency medical card completed, signed by a parent or guardian and filed in the school office. It should be kept up to date. A student may be excluded from school until this requirement has been fulfilled.

Medications should be taken outside the school day hours. Special circumstances or specific health care needs will be addressed with the teacher by the parent. All prescribed and over the counter medications are to be given to the teacher with parent or guardian directions in the original container. A physician may be asked to provide documentation. Medications will be kept in a locked cabinet.

All injuries must be reported to the teacher. If the injury is minor, the students will be treated and then return to class. If medical attention is required we will attempt to contact the parents, guardians or named responsible adult. If not possible, the student may be taken to the hospital or we may call 911, following the District's policy.

Student Expectations

Students will demonstrate good character by the following behaviors:

  • Being respectful

  • Being responsible

  • Being trustworthy

  • Demonstrating good citizenship

School Closings

M.A.L.C. will be closed when Millington Community schools are closed.

Food Service

There is no food service at M.A.L.C.

Driving Privileges

Driving is a privilege. Students will drive in a responsible manner. Students are to park beyond the gate at the south end of the Glaza building.

Attendance

It is imperative that students be in attendance each school day in order to not miss a significant portion of their education. Many important learnings result from active participation in classroom and other school activities. The school is also concerned about helping students develop a high quality work ethic, which will be a significant factor in their success with future employers. All students must clock an average of at least 20 hours per week of in class instruction. Workplace and service learning hours are above and beyond classroom hours. Excessive absences will result in reviewing continuance in this program.

Dress for Success

Students will dress appropriately for both the classroom and work based learning components. They are expected to be clean, well groomed and wear clothing that will be non disruptive to the educational process.

Harassment Policy

The Board of Education recognizes that a student has the right to learn and employees have the right to work in an environment untainted by sexual or other forms of harassment or discrimination.

The harassment by a student or staff member toward any person is strictly forbidden. Any student or staff member who is found to have harassed someone will be subject to discipline in accordance with law and the Code of Conduct.

Reports of harassment may be made to the Building Administrator.
